Richard Menzies, Writer, Photographer, and Comedian - http://www.rdmenzies.com/

“My first camera, a folding Kodak, was foolishly left on a beach blanket in California and was swallowed up by the Pacific Ocean. I was only twelve years old at the time and didn't understand that the shoreline is constantly changing. Just like everything else.

Photography is my way of trying to hold back the tides of change. I press the shutter button and time stands still. A fraction of a second endures forever. Writing? It takes a bit longer, and I wish I could say that after decades of trying I have finally got the hang of it. Sadly, I have not. But I keep plugging away, because I do believe there are stories that need to be told, things that should not be forgotten, and characters who should never die.”

Safari West
Safari West is an absolutely great place to create some nice wildlife images. Safari West was the dream of Peter & Nancy Lang, the couple who opened it to the public in 1993. Peter was a Southern California cattle rancher with a yen for raising exotic animals. He began with African elands (antelope).
Dr. Nancy Lang, a Doctor of Biology and a native San Franciscan, was co-curator of the San Francisco Zoo. Peter and Nancy married in 1991 and later moved to Sonoma County where Peter had ranchland. Soon, they were stocking and breeding some strange and wondrous beasts.  “Our goal was to encourage endangered species, provide an ecologically sound environment and develop educational programs for kids and adults,” she explained. “Right from the beginning Peter and I vowed to focus on conservation, wildlife propagation and education,” said Nancy a few weeks ago as she sat in the shade of an arbor of African trumpet vines at Safari West’s camp headquarters. She managed to make herself heard over the screech of a pushy great Indian hornbill named Delilah who “always wants to get into the act.”

Today, Safari West not only features on-site field trips for schoolchildren — as many as 10,000 a year — but also offers a course in Zoo Biology at Santa Rosa Junior College, a
two-year degree program.   www.safariwest.com

Dolores Frank

Dolores retired from a 24 year career as a Pharmaceutical Consultant with The Upjohn Company.  Since then, she has earnestly pursued her second career as a photographer.

Dolores says, “It is the best time of my life. I love all aspects of photography; the pursuit of the image, the excitement of seeing what I captured and the ultimate joy of creating a beautiful print. I'm a member of a group called Ten Eyes.  Our goal is to create Fine Art photography.  Because of Ten Eyes, I have developed friendships which have been influential and supportive and encouraging.”

“My favorite images are those that express emotion. I like to find the ordinary and turn it into something extraordinary. My pictures are captured with my Canon 5D Mark 2 and-or my Canon 10D.   My digital darkroom work is done using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and, I do all of my printing on Epson printers with archival inks using a variety of different archival papers.

For me, photography is more than a passion. It is a way of life. My trips are all photography oriented and because of the focus, they have been extremely rewarding.”
